Verdun, Ville d'Histoire
La bataille de Verdun fut la plus grande bataille du XX° siècle. Dès les premiers jours de combat, elle marqua les esprits des contemporains et, en quelques semaines, le nom de Verdun fit le tour de la planète. La violence des combats et le courage dont firent preuve les assiégés déclenchèrent des vagues d'enthousiasme et de sympathie pour les « combattants du droit contre la force».
Dans bien des cas, avant même la fin de la guerre, nombre de pays ont rendu hommage à la « cité héroïque », la « cité martyre », et l'ont décorée de leur 1er ordre national en témoignage de leur admiration. Elle devint ainsi la ville la plus décorée de France. Elle est restée depuis 1916 le symbole de la Première Guerre Mondiale, cette dimension conférant à la cité et à son champ de bataille une dimension universelle.
La guerre 1914-1918 vit participer au conflit les nations des cinq continents, comprenant toutes les puissances de l'époque. Quel rôle les pays engagés dans ce conflit ont-ils joué? Dans quels contextes se sont-ils engagés ? Pour quels résultats ? Quels liens en ont résulté avec la France et avec Verdun? Et aujourd'hui qu'en reste-il ?
A travers ce site (en devenir), la Ville de Verdun souhaite apporter sa contribution à une meilleure connaissance de cette page d'histoire pour l'Afrique subsaharienne et en particulier l'Afrique de l'ouest.
A terme, les sites histoire de la Ville de Verdun ont vocation à couvrir tous les continents.
